27th December 2009 Update
We have 220 entries for the 2010 hanging basket competition and many of you are keen to get your baskets and make a start.  We have the baskets and potting mix ready to distribute to your nominated nurseries and will send the majority out to metro retail nurseries 29th-30th December.

Jennifer at the RHSV will send out letters confirming that your baskets are available for collection very soon.  If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact me directly by email or on 03 9798 7066.
Or call Jennifer Rickerby on 03 5367 6363

The Great Victorian Hanging Basket Competition is an opportunity for amateur gardeners to get involved in Australia’s biggest garden show. Affiliate clubs and societies of the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria, from Swan Hill to Welshpool have entered one hanging basket per club in the competition.  Plus individual members of the ‘Royal’ can also compete.  That's 130 Hanging Baskets in one stunning display at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show!

Each entrant is supplied with one GARDMAN 300mm (14”) hanging basket and basket liner, a bag of Debco Terra Cotta and Tub premium potting mix and a complimentary tray of seedlings from Scotsburn Nurseries.  The only competition rule is that the basket and liner supplied, must be used... and the finished entry must include at least one living plant.

What happens to my basket?  All baskets must be delivered to Scotsburn Nurseries or directly to the Carlton Gardens in the week prior to the show opening.  Special arrangements have been made for non-metropolitan entrants to drop their baskets off at their local garden centre where we will have them picked up.  After the show baskets are available for collection from Scotsburn or, by arrangement from your local garden centre.

Judging is completed by experienced show judges along with all the other International Flower and Garden Show floral and garden design competitions prior to the commencement of the show.  Winners are notified by telephone as quickly as possible so they can come and admire their creations on display.   Please click here for the results of the 2009 competition, and here to view a You Tube clip of the winning entries.

Can I join in? Absolutely!  Follow this link to the Royal's web site for more detailed information on joining the great Victorian Hanging Basket Competition or your local garden club.  Or print off an entry form here (just remember you will have to join the Royal first - $15.00 annual membership, or a garden club affiliated to the Royal) and send it off to:
